Sustainability is a concept that captures our ability to keep something going, any sort of societal practice or practice that a business, industry, or community does.

In a general sense, renewable resources are sustainable, because they can be regenerated, but it is not sustainable to use them faster than they are able to regenerate. Using non-renewable resources, like fossil fuels, is also not sustainable.

A practice can also be unsustainable if it generates pollution or other problems that will eventually require it to be stopped. Sustainability is not just about environmental issues and supply and demand, but it also encompasses social issues–something can be unsustainable if it causes human suffering or problems for society.
